
Los Angeles has many incredible people who work hard to change the world through government and faith partnerships. Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services is filled with extraordinary people, who are dedicated to helping children succeed.
Despite DCFS’s monumental and often heroic efforts, its system is failing due to several issues. The department does not have enough funding to support the over 30,000 kids in its care. DCFS, for instance, had a $350-million deficit in 2022. There are also issues regarding caseloads. Most caseworkers have a caseload that is often greater than 40 children. This is twice as many children as the recommended number of 12-15. DCFS caseworkers are often lacking the mental health and help they need to do such a stressful job. The department’s biggest challenge is finding homes for these amazing children, and providing additional resources and support to the families that open their homes as well as enter into faith-based and government partnerships.
